That shit does seem systemic in punk and hardcore. There’s a lot of glorifying of the sadsack, Charlie Brown, Mets fan persona. As part of the buy-in, you gotta suspend your disbelief that people like that are real and not completely made up character exercises on the part of shitty community theater actors.

I remember one time we were staying with a girl on tour and her EX-dude [who had two American Nightmare tattoos while wearing an American Nightmare shirt] insisted on sleeping on the floor in her room so none of us would be with her. That dude bought in. He wanted the whole persona for himself. He probably thought about his ex a lot. Talked about her a lot. Maybe wrote songs or poetry or short fiction about her a lot.

Watching that sad piece of shit really made an impression on me. I’d been hokey about women before, but you never really understand what a loser you look like until you see it in others. Since that time, I’ve come to understand that being dumped, rejected, or put in the friend-zone is really not a big deal. At all.

Who gives a shit? Friends are cool. That weirdo shit, “I’ve got enough friends!” just seems crazy because studies indicate the wealthiest people have the most friends and had those friends BEFORE they were wealthy. What the hell is the problem with having one more friend? And just to cut through the bullshit even more, what’s up with only wanting pussy/penis? You pretended that there was something about that person you found intriguing, but now that they won’t give you some leg you suddenly realize they suck? If someone was cool as a love interest, they’re also cool as a friend.

There’s nearly 4b women on Earth and 65% of them are roughly the age people in the western world consider “fuckable”. So fuck fixation. Fuck acting like a possessive weirdo dickhead. There’s enough for everyone. Similar stats exist for dudes.

Stop acting like you’re in the Notebook when you’re really in Fear / Swim Fan.
